Autumn 2007

Hi there ! Welcome to my Personal Space here on h2g2.

Check out the Edited Guide and perhaps you'll even find one of my solo entries!

I really love the concept of building h2g2 into the thing Douglas Adams talked about in his vision of what we're attempting to do here. But to achieve that vision, we need your help!

During the seven-plus years I've been on this site I participated in nearly all of the volunteer schemes - the Sub-editors, the Gurus, the Scouts, the ACEs, the Photographers and the Curators. While I've surrendered many of those badges, I'm still planning on being active as a Guru and Curator.

I've also managed to contribute some material to the Guide. I've written bits for the h2g2 University and The Post. But I'm most proud of my contributions to the Edited Guide - at last count, it appears that I've written, edited or contributed to some 300 entries, including more than 110 written all on my own.

Mostly, I write about my home state of Pennsylvania and endeavor to contribute my 'unconventional knowledge' about my local area - which is exactly what Douglas envisioned all of us doing. Why don't you give it a try and see what you can contribute?

Or if adding to the Guide isn't your cup of tea, why not help out at Peer Review. All you need to do there is read an entry and post your comments to the attached thread. If you like it, say so. If it can be improved, say how. It's surprisingly easy and is a good way to improve your writing as well as the overall writing in the Edited Guide!

Now to business (and no that wasn't a toast)....

Updating the Guide

Get into it!

After two-plus years of updating Edited Guide Entries on an unofficial, volunteer basis,h2g2 finally got an official scheme! Under the old unofficial system we totally overhauled close to 30 Edited Entries and freshened up countless others. The old update pages can still be found here.

Please consider visiting the Update Forum and fixing some of our older EG entries that need an update!

Are you new to the Guide?

Do you have questions that need answered?

Check out the ACEs home page, the Welcome page, or take the Newcomer's Tour. If you still can't find the answer, or if you simply don't feel like looking, feel free to ask me and I'll probably know the answer or know where to find it.

I love the way h2g2 celebrates the holidays. My personal favourite bit of holiday fun is the community entry on the Twelve Days of Christmas. To me that is a perfect example of Douglas' vision for the Guide.

Of course, the fact that Santa is an honorary italic makes spending the holidays here extra fun too!

From my family to yours, have a joyous holiday season - eat too much; drink just enough; and try to enjoy your relatives' company.

Hello .

If you're seeking Jimi X at the moment (and why are you hanging around his Personal Space if you're not?), we're afraid he's away for a few days celebrating his 10th wedding anniversary with his lovely wife5.

Don't be too despondent. We're sure Jimi X would have had engrossing and meaningful conversations with you had he been here.

Sadly, he's not.

We're sure that he'll check any messages you might leave on this page and answer them in a relatively prompt fashion when he returns on Wednesday, 14 July.

Just in case you were wondering, he's actually left Pennsylvania! And you won't be able to check up on him either...

You see, they've gone away to Rhode Island (which doesn't have any Edited Entries written about it yet) to celebrate their anniversary with a second honeymoon6.

Oh, one last thing... When he does return, please excuse any dreamy smiles or general silly talk for a few days as the post-honeymoon effect may take a few days to wear off!

Seaside 2004

At the beach

Hello .

If you're seeking Jimi X at the moment (and why are you hanging around his Personal Space if you're not?), we're afraid he's away at the beach playing in the surf and sand with his family.

Don't be too despondent. We're sure Jimi X would have had engrossing and meaningful conversations with you had he been here.

Sadly, he's not.

And unlike some people who shall remain nameless Jimi X does not take his laptop to the beach to stay in touch with h2g2.

We're sure that he'll check any messages you might leave on this page and answer them in a relatively prompt fashion when he returns on Tuesday 22 June.

Just in case you were wondering, he's actually left Pennsylvania! Though he didn't exactly travel far...

You can be reasonably sure he'll be eating at Old Mill Crab House and looking at The Towers of Delaware while soaking up the sun and having fun.

Everyone has a story to share. Help us build the Guide with your unconventional knowledge!

The Internet is a big7 place, so you can imagine my relief when I found h2g2 about two and a half years ago. Since then I've become a Subeditor, a Guru, a Scout and an ACE. I have really bought into Douglas Adams' vision of what we're attempting to do here. So, if you've got any questions about the site, I'm probably a good person to ask.

I live in Pennsylvania, USA, and I've written a lot of entries about my local area. Why don't you do the same?

Please take the time to contribute to the Guide or to Peer Review.

Now to business (and no that wasn't a toast)....

Catch me if you can...

Updating the Guide

Get into it!

I have volunteered to step away from Subediting and concentrate wholly upon updating Edited Guide entries. If you know of an entry that needs updating, please point it out to me along with where I can find the information to update the entry with. More specific details can be found here.

Please keep in mind that I'm doing this on my own for the most part so it may not progress as swiftly as we'd all like it to, but at least it's a start!

Astronomy Projects

Do check out the h2g2 Astronomical Society. This group of star-gazers does some quite amazing things, including news, views, links, and things to make you think.

Are we alone in the universe?

Now, you can join the search for extraterrestial life with a few dozen guide researchers who have joined together to help the SETI team. For more information you can go to the h2g2 SETI@home page.

Why don't you go see what's up in the Observatory?

Having difficulties with your writing?

I'm a Sub-editor, maybe I can offer you some help. I'd also suggest you check out the writing guidelines.

Are you new to the Guide?

Do you have questions that need answered?

Moderation complaint reaction

I'm starting to think that all of this anti-moderation rhetoric is starting to be counterproductive to the long-term health of the h2g2 community.

Mark, Peta, Abi, Anna, Ashley, Jim, Sam and Sri all are aware of the anti-moderation faction's feelings with regard to their 'demands' The full-time staff hear everything and they are genuinely committed to this project and its community.

I wish there was some way the community would learn this basic fact.

These people worked and kept the site alive when there was no money for tea and toilet paper! Peta and Abi both were Researchers before being hired as itallics. They *know* the community. They understand the community. Often better than the community knows and understands itself.

When they say 'we're working on it' they mean that they are working on it. This isn't some lame excuse to tell you to go away - they're actually working to make things better.

We're all so cynical and jaded that we fail to recognize, accept and appreciate it when somebody is upfront and honest with us like the staff at h2g2 have always been. They bend over backwards to accomodate the community - not because of any sinister reason but because they honestly believe that this is the best way to do business.

When their hard work and sacrifices are belittled by the community, calling for revolutions and boycotts and other nonsense, it's got to hurt them emotionally. And when they say 'we're done with arguing about moderation', it's because they've got more important things to do than listen to the same garbage again and again and again.

I'm sick and tired of hearing all this nonsense about revolts and letter campaigns and the like. Mark and Peta have told us they're working to make things better.

Let them do it!

All of our stupid little tactics only serve to make the entire community look exactly like the thing the BBC fears - a bunch of techno-idiots who behave like little children who cannot be trusted to not shout obscenities, post links to porn, etc.

As Peta said in her journal, ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! The whole community suffers when any group dominates the itallics' time and energy.

I've been around this site for quite a while and I've never seen anything like this. If you don't like the direction of the site, go away for a short time and then come back and see if things haven't improved. I feel very confident that things will get better.

Remember a month ago we didn't even have a site. Things are taking place behind the scenes that we don't know about - things that cannot be discussed in the open yet.

Give them a chance to make it better. And do something productive instead of sniping and complaining while we wait.

I'm sure that there are some members of these anti-moderation factions that are wonderful people - in fact several are online friends of mine. And I appologize for lumping people who care about the community and want to make it better in with people who are complaining for the sake of complaining.

I'm just really tired of this 'debate' and I want to see us move on and get back to the work at hand - building the Guide.

I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist, but that's just peanuts...
