Oddity of the Week: Sint Nicolaaskerk

0 Conversations

This week, some people celebrate St Nicholas Day. Here's a beautiful church built in honour of this saint.

Sint Nicolaaskerk

Have you been good this year? If you have, and you live in the Netherlands, Germany, or Austria, you might get a present-filled visit from St Nicholas on 6 December. It's a tradition.

Nicholas is a popular saint in many countries, particularly Russia. We thought we'd share this image of a beautiful Amsterdam church in his honour. You may find this one familiar – Phoenician Trader has written about it.

This print comes from 1890-1900, the Library of Congress wasn't sure. Not only is the church breathtaking, but the city itself seems, well, peaceful.

If Sint Nicolaas is coming to visit you, we hope he has good news.

Otherwise, get your excuses ready. And feed his horse.
