Will you buy candy, flowers, or a card for someone this week? Take a look at this card.

Valentine's Day, 1861

St Valentine's Day, 1861.

Quick, US and Canadian readers: who was St Valentine? [No, he had nothing to do with what happened in Chicago. That was Al Capone.]

Europeans: how old is Valentine's Day as a mushy holiday?

In the US, apparently, pretty old. If you look carefully at the corner of this picture, you'll see the date: 1861. People were already making the postman work back then, conveying their flowery greetings.

Okay, we know he didn't have any Victoria's Secret catalogues in that bag. Victoria kept her secrets back then.

Don't forget to order the roses and champagne, fellas – maybe your gf will try on a hoop skirt in honour of the occasion. No? Well, at least, she'll appreciate the gesture.
