Oddity Of The Week - Staying At The Wigwam Motel
Created | Updated Mar 10, 2013
A great piece of Americana.
Staying at the Wigwam Motel
Ah, the great classic days of Route 66. You 'motorvated', tooling along in your big family car. As Dinah Shore sang, 'See the USA in your Chevrolet, America is asking you to call. . . '
When you got tired of gazing at the wonders, you stopped for the night in a cool motel like this one. The Library of Congress notes, 'The brain child of Frank Redford. There were originally seven Wigwam Motels. The wigwams have a steel frame covered with wood, felt and canvas under a cement stucco exterior.' What kid wouldn't love to sleep here, and dream of roaming the plains with the Lakota?
The photographer, Carol M Highsmith, has documented many unique features of the US landscape, available for viewing the Library of Congress Archives. Like this fine motel near Holbrook, Arizona.
Makes you want to go on a trip, doesn't it?
