Oddity of the Week: Washington Summer Fashion

0 Conversations

It's summer in the northern hemisphere. Some of us are HOT. How hot is it? Hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk. Hot enough to get a stuffy man to wear…

Washington Summer Fashion

US Vice President Garner in a summer cuit.

Who is this man? He's the US Vice President, Mr John Vance Garner. Quite the stylish fellow, for 1935.

Where is he? Washington, DC. When is it? Midsummer, time for the heat wave. At this point, even dignitaries can be forgiven for going a bit informal. So what does he wear?

His 'summer suit'.

We'll let the Library of Congress tell it:

Set for summer. Vice President John Nance Garner emerging from his air conditioned office to face the annual summer heat wave at the Capitol decked out in Washington's regulation summer regalia.

Frankly, we're impressed. We didn't know they had a/c in 1935. How high-tech of them.
