June Create: Truth is Stranger than (Science) Fiction

I would have liked you to have been deep frozen too and waiting still as fresh in your flesh for my return to earth

Yeah, maybe cryogenic suspension hasn't happened yet, but take a look at some of the things that Science Fiction has predicted.

  • Douglas Adams' Babel Fish is now replicated in various apps for android and ios with real-time translations.
  • Arthur C Clarke wrote about electronic newspapers resembling tablet computers in 2001: A Space Odyssey.
  • HG Wells predicted motion sensing doors in When the Sleeper Wakes.
  • In Fahrenheit 451 Ray Bradbury's use of 'thimble radios' predates ear buds.
  • The Star Trek series and films predicted the use of mobile phones and 3-D Printers, or replicators.
  • 1984's Neuromancer by William Gibson talks of computer hackers and even forsaw Google Glass.
  • Thanks a lot Science Fiction, we're all now up to our eyes and beyond with technology. Do you like what we've become? Or are you more of a Luddite? Would you like to be attended to in hospital by one of Robert Heinlein's Flexible Franks1 Have you read or watched something and thought, "Yeah, that'd be a great (or very bad) idea"? Then tell us about it, in words, in pictures, using the technology we currently have, of course.

Love it or hate it, the future's here, the future's now, so let's hear about it.
